Stresses of a Parent With A Sick/Hurt Kid

Nothing prepares you for one of your kids to be sick or hurt. No matter how many books you read, things you watch or stories you hear can get you ready to actually experience that. From the day they are born every cough, every bump on the head, every cut is going to make you nervous.

I can say that you should step back and take a breath. I can tell you to think happy thoughts. However, when you are in that moment all you can do is stress. No matter what anyone says your baby is sick. The best thing for you to do is focus on each thing as it comes. The important thing to remember is that you have to be calm for your kids sake.

Personally, I have been through everything from a cold, to asthma attacks, RSV, roto virus, flu, surgery, 3rd degree burns and everything in between. Yes, at times, I still freak out. I try to remember these rules:

1. Stay away from Google and Web MD. There's no sense in freaking out about the worse case scenario which is most likely to come up if you search it.

2. The best way to figure out what's going on is to replay the last 24 hours. What's changed? What did they eat? Who were they around? What did they do?

3. You as a parent know your child better than anyone. ALWAYS trust your instincts. Never let anyone (not even a doctor) discount how you feel. If you think there is something wrong, chances are, you are right.

4.Whether you like it or not, most times not. You always have friends and family have been where you are right now. Never hesitate to ask for help. Remember, sometimes you are going to get advice that you don't want. People are going to try and "help" in the ways that they deem "helpful". Ignore the advice you don't want or simply just say thanks.

5. Take breaks when you can. Especially, if it's something serious it takes a toll on you almost as much as them. You being stressed and getting sick doesn't help. Getting some rest, a shower, a snack or even just taking a walk always helpful.

My advice is to follow these rules every time. It has always helped me through some of the toughest times. Trust yourself always and don't worry. Usually, it's not the worst case scenario that you have in your head.
